How to Build a Growth Goal

It’s easy to accept the status quo within ourselves. Leverage this exercise to outline one growth goal for yourself.

Who knows, if it works once, try another. And another…

Define Your Goal

Big or small, what is something you want to see improve in your life or within yourself?

Reason

Everything begins with ‘why’. Define the reason why this goal is important to you. Is it something that successful achievement will bring into your life? Or the opposite, this achievement will remove something unwanted from your life. Is this for yourself or is this driven by how you want others to see you?

Barriers

What barriers and challenges do you expect to come in the way of achieving this goal? We are much more likely to see success if we can anticipate challenges that may rise up along the way.

Resources

Be honest with exactly what do you think will be required of you to achieve this goal. Factor in the barriers you’re anticipating along the way. Is it mostly a time investment? If so, maybe you’ll need support from your partner or family as this will likely reduce your time with them. Will it require financial resources? How much and is it worth it?

You don’t want to get derailed down the road because surprise resource requirements are too overwhelming so try to anticipate all necessary resources required before launching this undertaking.

Duration

How long will this process take? Break it down into actionable time segments such as 1 hour on Wed and Thur evenings for the next 3 months. Hope is never a strategy so be realistic about how long this effort will take.

Metric

Clearly determine how you will measure your success and ultimately your progress. How will you define when this growth goal truly is complete? If your goal is to be a “Better Partner” how would you define that? Without clarity around success, we will likely abandon the goal as it feels impossible to achieve.

Congratulations on taking this attempt to improve yourself. Clearly outline the items above and stay engaged in your process and you will find success… not if, but simply when.

Feel free to schedule a session if you want to work on this with Blair.
